A mouthguard, also known as a gumshield, mouth protector or sports guard covers the teeth and gums and is designed to absorb and distribute the impact, reducing damage to the teeth and mouth. These are recommended for any contact sort such as rugby, combat sports and even hockey.
There are 3 main types of mouthguard, each having their own purposes. The first are snap fit braces which are a low range mouthguard offering minimal protection but they do not require any moulding or fitting. Mouldable mouthguards are a mid range option offering a good level of protection while not costing too much. Custom fitted mouthguards are a high quality item that are custom made to be a perfect fit for your mouth – if you want the best protection, this is the option for you.
The American Dental Association recommends wearing custom mouthguards for a very extensive list of sports, these sports include: acrobats, basketball, boxing, field hockey, football, gymnastics, handball, ice hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, roller hockey, rugby, shot putting, skateboarding, skiing, skydiving, soccer, squash, surfing
Most mouthguards are designed to protect only the upper teeth because these teeth stick out slightly more than the bottom teeth and are therefore at much greater risk of impact. Your bottom set of teeth are mostly protected by your top set of teeth expecially when you are wearing a mouthguard. It would also pose a practical issue if you tried to fit two different sports mouthguards into your mouth since it would take up too much space and potentially compromise the position of your jaw, making it susceptible to injury.
