Emergency Denture Repair: What to Do When You Can’t Wait

A denture usually breaks at the worst possible moment. It slips out of a wet hand at the basin, it cracks on a crust of toast, or a clasp gives way an hour before you are due somewhere. If you are searching for emergency denture repair right now, the short answer is this: stop wearing it, keep every piece, put nothing else near it, and call a technician rather than reaching for the glue drawer.

We have repaired dentures across London, Surrey and the South East for over 30 years, we answer the phone 24 hours a day including bank holidays, and we come to your home. Most repairs are finished inside 50 minutes. This guide covers what to do in the first hour, which mistakes turn a cheap fix into an expensive one, and what to expect on timing and cost.

Is a Broken Denture Really an Emergency?

Not a medical one. Nobody needs an ambulance for a cracked plate. But it is a genuine dental emergency, and it is treated as one for good reason.

A broken denture leaves sharp edges against soft tissue. Wearing it even for a day can rub the gum raw, and an ulcer takes far longer to settle than the repair takes to carry out. There is also the practical side. Eating becomes difficult, speech changes, and most people simply stop leaving the house until it is sorted.

There is a third reason that matters more than people expect. Cracked acrylic keeps flexing every time you bite, and the crack lengthens. A hairline fracture caught early is a straightforward bond. The same denture snapped clean in two a week later may be beyond saving. Our 24 hour emergency denture repair service exists because acting on day one costs less than acting on day seven.

What to Do in the First Hour

Four things, in this order:

Take It Out and Leave It Out

Resist the urge to wear it just for today. A fractured base concentrates pressure on a small patch of gum instead of spreading it, which is how sore spots and infections start. If part of the denture is missing altogether, the bite becomes uneven and the remaining sections take strain they were never built for.

Find Every Fragment

Collect everything, including chips you think are worthless. A technician can often bond original pieces back into place, and the fit stays truer than it would with a replacement section. Check the plughole and the floor where it landed.

Store It Damp and Protected

Acrylic and nylon dry out and distort, which quietly changes the fit before anyone has touched it. Put the pieces in a sealed container with a little water or denture solution and keep them apart so the broken edges do not grind together in transit. A tissue on the worktop is how second breakages happen.

Call Someone Qualified, Not a Chemist

Denture repairs in the UK are dental work, and the person doing them should be registered with the General Dental Council. You can check anyone’s registration yourself on the GDC online register, which is updated daily and free to search. Our repairs are carried out by an experienced clinical dental technician, and you are welcome to ask for a registration number before anyone starts work.

What Never to Do to a Broken Denture

Most of the dentures we cannot save arrive that way because of something done at home with good intentions.

Superglue and Household Adhesives

This is the single most common mistake, and it is the one that most often turns a repair into a remake.

Ordinary cyanoacrylate is not manufactured for use inside the mouth. It is not biocompatible, it can irritate the soft tissue it touches, and some formulations release fumes that sting the gum. The bigger problem is technical. Acrylic is porous, so the glue soaks into the surface and sets there. Once it has, no laboratory can achieve a proper bond along that join, because the material it needs to bind to is buried under set adhesive. We can usually rescue a clean break. We often cannot rescue a glued one.

Epoxy, nail glue and household repair adhesives all carry the same problem.

Shop Bought Denture Repair Kits

Kits sell well because a broken denture feels like a problem you ought to be able to solve for a few pounds. In practice they use cold cure materials that never reach the strength of a properly processed repair, and they cannot restore fit.

That last point is the one people miss. A denture is not simply a piece of plastic that needs rejoining. It is a moulded surface matched to your gum, and if the two halves are bonded even fractionally out of alignment, the denture will rock, rub and eventually break again in a new place. Getting the alignment right is the skill, not the glue.

Filing or Reshaping It Yourself

Sanding a sharp edge feels sensible and is not. Material removed cannot be put back, the bite alters, and pressure redistributes across the gum in ways you will feel a fortnight later. Our guide on what to do when your dentures break covers this in more detail.

One genuine exception applies. If the break has cut your gum and bleeding will not stop, or you develop swelling, fever or severe pain, that is beyond a denture problem. Contact a dentist or NHS 111 for advice.

Which Denture Breakages Can Be Repaired?

Most of them, provided nobody has glued it first.

A base cracked in half is routine work and is bonded with dental acrylic to a strength you will not detect with your tongue. Teeth that have come away can be reset, and a chipped or lost tooth can be replaced and shade matched. Snapped clasps on a partial denture can be rebuilt or replaced. Chrome dentures need different handling again, since a fractured metal framework is soldered rather than bonded, and not every workshop is set up for it.

Full denture repairs are among the most common jobs we see, usually after a drop onto a hard bathroom floor.

The cases that go the other way are dentures broken into many small pieces with fragments missing, appliances already weakened by years of wear, and anything contaminated with household glue. Where a repair would not last, we will say so rather than take payment for something that fails in a month.

How Long Does an Emergency Denture Repair Take?

Faster than most people assume. A straightforward fracture takes us around 50 minutes, and because our technicians travel to you with the equipment, that happens at your kitchen table rather than across two appointments and a laboratory posting.

More involved work takes longer. Replacing several teeth, rebuilding a clasp or repairing a chrome framework can run to a few hours, and a small number of jobs need to go back to the workshop. Even then, same day turnaround is usually achievable. Our article on how long a denture repair usually takes breaks the timings down by type of damage.

What slows things down is almost never the repair itself. It is the days people spend deciding whether to bother.

How Much Does an Emergency Denture Repair Cost?

Our denture repair service starts from £80, and that is the same figure at two in the morning as at two in the afternoon. We apply no out of hours premium, which is worth checking with anyone else you ring.

The final price depends on the damage. A single clean fracture sits at the lower end, while replacing several teeth or working on a metal framework costs more because it takes longer and uses more material. You will be told the figure before any work begins. Our guide to denture repair costs breaks down typical UK pricing.

Weigh it against the alternative. A new denture runs to several hundred pounds at minimum, and repairing promptly is what keeps you on the cheaper side of that line.

Can You Get an Emergency Denture Repair on the NHS?

In principle, yes. The NHS lists a broken or loose denture among the reasons to seek urgent dental care, and guidance says urgent treatment should be offered within 24 hours or 7 days depending on symptoms. You can read the NHS advice on urgent dental appointments for the full criteria.

In practice, the gap between principle and availability is wide across much of the South East. Getting an urgent NHS appointment at a weekend, and finding a practice with the laboratory capacity to turn a denture repair round quickly, are two different problems. Many people who call us have already tried and been offered a date the following week.

If your denture is beyond repair, we also make new dentures and can carry out a full clinical assessment at our practices in Sutton and Epsom through our clinical services.

How to Reduce the Chance of the Next Breakage

Dentures rarely fail without warning. There is usually a reason, and most of them are preventable.

Clean yours over a basin part filled with water or over a folded towel, since the majority of breakages we attend are drops onto tiles. Keep it in water or solution overnight rather than letting it dry out. Avoid boiling water and never put a denture through a dishwasher, as heat warps acrylic permanently.

Above all, treat a loose denture as a warning rather than an inconvenience. A plate that rocks is flexing with every bite, and flexing acrylic fatigues and eventually splits. That looseness is nearly always the gum having receded, which a denture reline corrects in a single visit. Having one every couple of years prevents a good proportion of the emergencies we are called out to.

Emergency Denture Repair FAQs

Can I Wear My Denture Until the Repair?

Better not to. Broken edges rub the gum, and continuing to chew on a cracked base usually lengthens the crack and makes the repair harder.

Will the Repair Be Visible?

On a properly bonded acrylic fracture, no. The join is filled, cured and polished back so neither you nor anyone looking at you will find it.

Can You Repair a Denture That Has Been Superglued?

Sometimes, but not always, and the odds drop the longer the glue has been in place. Bring it in unglued if you possibly can.

Do You Really Come Out at Night?

Yes. We operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including bank holidays, across London, Surrey and the South East.

Is It Worth Repairing an Old Denture?

Usually, if the fit is still sound. If it has been repaired repeatedly, no longer sits properly or the teeth are worn flat, a replacement is often the better use of your money and we will tell you that honestly.

How Soon Should I Call After It Breaks?

The same day if you can. Cracks spread, edges cut, and the pieces are easiest to rejoin before anything has been lost or handled repeatedly.
