What Is A Denture Reline?

A denture reline reshapes the inside (fitting) surface of your existing denture so it sits snugly against your gums again. Over time, the bone and soft tissue underneath your denture naturally change shape, leaving the denture loose, rocking, or rubbing. Relining adds a fresh layer of material to the underside of the denture, restoring a close, comfortable fit without replacing the appliance itself.

For most patients, relining is the quickest and most cost-effective way to extend the life of a denture they’re already happy with.

Signs You May Need A Denture Reline

If any of the following sound familiar, a reline is worth considering:

  • Your denture feels loose, rocks, or slips when you eat or speak
  • You’re getting sore spots, ulcers, or pressure marks on your gums
  • Food regularly gets trapped underneath the denture
  • You’re using more denture adhesive than usual just to hold it in place
  • The fit has gradually changed since the denture was first made
  • You’ve recently had a tooth taken out and your immediate denture no longer feels secure

A poorly fitting denture can affect your nutrition, speech, and confidence. If something feels off, get in touch and we’ll talk you through your options.

If your denture is cracked or broken rather than loose, see our denture repair service.

Soft Reline Vs Hard Reline: Which Is Right For You?

Not every denture reline is the same. The right approach depends on the condition of your denture and the state of your gums.

Soft reline. A soft, cushioning material is bonded to the fitting surface of the denture. This is often the better choice when the gums are sore, healing, or particularly sensitive, for example after a recent extraction or for patients prone to ulcers. A soft reline can feel more comfortable but typically needs replacing more often than a hard reline.

Hard reline. A firm, durable acrylic layer is added to the underside of the denture. This is the most common option for long-term comfort and fit, particularly when the denture itself is still in good condition but the underlying gum has receded.

Clinic option if you prefer. We also work from Sherwood Park Dental (Sutton) and Alan Wilson Dentistry (Epsom), where a full check-up can be arranged at the same visit.

High-quality materials, every time. No shortcuts on materials or technique. You get the same clinical standard you’d expect from any GDC-registered facility.

How Long Does A Denture Reline Take?

Most denture reline appointments take 30 to 60 minutes from start to finish, and the denture is usually ready to wear straight away. We aim to complete the work in a single visit so you’re never left without your denture for long.

For more complex cases, or where laboratory work is involved, we’ll explain the timeframe upfront so you can plan accordingly.

Our Denture Reline Process

Assessment

We start by examining your denture and your gums, identifying any pressure points, areas of poor fit, or underlying issues.

Impression

A precise impression is taken of the fitting surface using your existing denture as the tray.

Reline

A fresh layer of soft or hard reline material is bonded to the underside of the denture and contoured to your gum shape.

Final fit

We check the bite, the seal, and your overall comfort, making any small adjustments before you leave.

Whether we visit you at home or you come to one of our partner clinics, the standard is the same: clinical-grade workmanship, completed by a registered technician, with no shortcuts.

Reline, Repair, Or New Denture?

Sometimes a denture reline is the right answer. Sometimes it isn’t. If your denture is cracked, has a broken tooth, or the acrylic itself is worn through, you may be better suited to a denture repair or, in some cases, a new denture altogether.

We’ll always give you a straight answer about whether relining is the most clinically sensible and cost-effective option for your situation. If a different solution makes more sense, we’ll tell you.

For urgent issues that can’t wait, our 24hr emergency denture repair service is available around the clock.
